Edmund Lalrindika scored three goals against Mohun Bagan in the Durand Cup 2026 Final on 23 August 2026, registering a hat-trick in the first 45 minutes and helping East Bengal lift their 17th Durand Cup title. Lalrindika is the second East Bengal player to join the elite list of Kolkata Derby hat-trick scorers, after Bhaichung Bhutia.

Historic Hat-Tricks in the Kolkata Derby

The first recorded hat-trick in a Kolkata Derby came in 1934 when Mohun Bagan’s Amiya Deb netted four goals against East Bengal in the Darbhanga Shield semifinal. Three years later, in 1937, Asit Ganguly scored a hat-trick for Mohun Bagan in the Raja Shield final, leading his side to a 4-0 victory.

In 1997, East Bengal forward Bhaichung Bhutia produced a memorable hat-trick against Mohun Bagan in the Federation Cup semi-final, a match that ended 4-1 in favour of the Red & Gold. Bhutia’s goals-a header from a corner, a solo dribble past two defenders and the keeper, and a final flourish-cemented his place in Derby lore.

The 2009 I-League encounter on 25 October saw Mohun Bagan’s Chidi Edeh score four goals in a 5-3 win over East Bengal. Edeh’s performance remains one of the most devastating individual displays in Derby history.

In January 2022, Kiyan Nassiri, then a Mohun Bagan substitute, netted a hat-trick in an ISL match that ended 3-1 in favour of Mohun Bagan. He scored his first goal in the 64th minute and added two more in stoppage time.

Lalrindika’s 2026 Performance

In the 2026 Durand Cup final, Lalrindika, a Mizo-born forward, struck his first goal in the 12th minute, a shot from 20-25 yards that beat Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith. Ten minutes later, a brilliant pass from Dani Ramirez set Lalrindika up for a second goal, where he dribbled past two defenders before slotting the ball in. The third goal came in the 44th minute, completing the hat-trick before halftime and securing East Bengal’s 17th Durand Cup triumph.

Lalrindika’s achievement places him alongside the likes of Deb, Ganguly, Bhutia, Edeh and Nassiri, underscoring the rarity of hat-tricks in the fiercely contested Kolkata Derby.

The list of Derby hat-trick scorers now reads: Amiya Deb (1934), Asit Ganguly (1937), Bhaichung Bhutia (1997), Chidi Edeh (2009), Kiyan Nassiri (2022), and Edmund Lalrindika (2026).
