Derby County's fight to stay in the Championship is being hampered by the fallout from a collapsed takeover. The Rams sit 22nd with just five points from eight games, a position made more difficult by the summer's failed investment.
Turki Alalshikh's planned takeover of the club fell apart an hour before it was due to be completed in August. Head coach John Eustace confirmed the timing disrupted their squad building. "Obviously, we had our targets that we were looking at and who we wanted to bring in," Eustace said. "When the takeover eventually didn't happen, we've lost a lot of momentum on players that we were looking at."
Squad building after disruption
That lost momentum saw key targets slip away. The club could not move quickly enough to re-sign last season's loanee Ben Brereton-Diaz, who scored eight goals, and he joined Sheffield United. A move for Liam Millar ended when Birmingham City secured him on loan. Winger Patrick Roberts was also on the list, but his wage demands proved a stumbling block.
Chief executive Stephen Pearce offered a different perspective on the window. "From a transfer perspective we hadn't lost anything we wanted to do," Pearce stated. The club did secure late deals, bringing in Mo Fuseini from Union Saint-Gilloise and re-signing David Ozoh from Crystal Palace for £4m, a fee far below the £10m valuation Palace set earlier in August.
Returnees and limitations
The return of influential loanees like Bobby Clark, Ozoh, and Sammie Szmodics, whose move was made permanent, only restored the squad to last season's level. New striker Henrik Meister, who scored just twice in a year before joining on loan from Pisa, suffered a head injury this month. With Carlton Morris and Patrick Agyemang also injured, the 22-year-old has been thrust into leading the line despite his limited impact so far.
Injury crisis in defence
Compounding the issues is a defensive injury crisis that has prevented a consistent back four since August. Reigning player of the season Matt Clarke is unlikely back before December. First-choice left-back Derry Murkin is out until after Christmas, while Jacob Widell Zetterstrom and Eiran Cashin are also sidelined. Agyemang has been out since April with an Achilles problem.
This fragility was evident in the recent 1-2 home loss to Birmingham, despite Bobby Clark's goal. A last-gasp Mohammed Fuseini strike did salvage a 1-1 draw at Burnley before the international break, preventing Derby from sitting bottom.
Eustace, who took over in February last year when the club were fourth-from-bottom, now faces a defining period. Owner David Clowes remains committed to bankrolling the club despite the takeover collapse. The immediate focus is halting the slide, with a home game against 14th-placed Wrexham on 10 October. Derby lost the last meeting 1-2 in January, and avoiding defeat is essential to build any momentum. Check the latest standings to see the scale of the task ahead.
