Derby County have confirmed the permanent signing of Sammie Szmodics from Ipswich Town for a fee of £2.7m. The obligation-to-buy clause in his loan agreement has been triggered, finalising the move for the 31-year-old attacking midfielder.
Szmodics originally joined Derby on loan from Ipswich in the January 2026 window after finding his opportunities limited at Portman Road. His contract with the Tractor Boys still had two years remaining. The permanent deal, which includes potential add-ons, was activated after he met specific performance criteria during his time at Pride Park. "Szmodics has already hit requirements to trigger the permanent transfer obligation in the deal," a report stated.
He has already made an impact this season, providing an assist in the 1-2 defeat to Birmingham City on September 12. In his initial 13-game loan spell last season, he contributed three goals and an assist. His arrival on a full-time basis is a boost for a Derby side sitting 22nd in the Championship with just five points from eight games. The Rams have scored only seven league goals this term and are winless in their last four matches.
Manager John Eustace has used Szmodics in an advanced midfield role, allowing him to run beyond the central striker. With his future now secured, the player can focus on helping improve the team's attacking output. Derby's next challenge is a home fixture against Wrexham on October 10.
