Derby County Community Trust is relaunching its Rams in Kenya volunteer trip for 2027, aiming to take more participants than ever before. The programme, which began in 2012, sends volunteers to partner schools in Nakuru to support education and community projects.
A no-obligation open evening for prospective volunteers will be held at Pride Park Stadium on Wednesday 16th September from 7pm to 8.30pm. Full registration details are available on the Community Trust's website.
Trip details and impact
Working with travel partner African Adventures, volunteers focus on renovating classrooms, improving sanitation and creating safer school environments. They also work alongside local teachers to deliver lessons, teach new skills and organise football tournaments for children, providing sports equipment.
The experience extends beyond the school gates with excursions to Lake Nakuru National Park, Menengai Crater and Thompson Falls. Volunteers also experience Kenyan culture through visits to the Walk Centre and a traditional Sunday Church Service.
Past volunteers have described the trip as major. One participant from the 2026 cohort said, "I just thought this would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and I mean it was, but I’m desperate to go again."
Another volunteer echoed the sentiment, stating, "The most incredible thing I’ve ever done. I said it was once in a lifetime, but I’ve been twice!"
The work in Kenya also feeds back into the Trust's community programmes in Derby, strengthening its local engagement. The club's current focus is split between off-field community work and the immediate challenge on the pitch, where Derby County sit 22nd in the Championship with just four points from seven games. Their next match is away to Burnley on 19 September, a fixture against the league's bottom side that offers a chance to improve a recent run of one win in five games.
