Derby County manager John Eustace has admitted there is "a lot of work to do" after his side's disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion. The loss leaves the Rams languishing in 21st place in the table with just four points from their opening five games, a situation compounded by a lengthy injuries list.
Derby started the game well at Pride Park but suffered a setback when West Brom's Aune Heggebo scored against the run of play. The visitors' task appeared to get harder when Brayann Pereira was sent off after 34 minutes, reducing them to ten men for the majority of the contest. Despite having a numerical advantage for nearly an hour, Derby could not find a way through a resolute West Brom defence. They created several chances in the second half but lacked the quality in the final third to convert them, a recurring issue this season having scored only five goals while conceding ten.
John Eustace said: "The way we started the game was excellent and then to go behind in the way we did against the run of play was a kick in the teeth." He told reporters it was another early goal conceded at home that the team is desperate to stop. The manager praised the players' attitude but was clear about the shortcomings.
Eustace pinpointed a lack of patience and forward movement as key reasons for the failure to score. With West Brom sitting deep and organised after the red card, Derby struggled to create clear openings. "That's where we are at the moment," Eustace said. "We had to be patient when they went down to 10 men, we needed forward runners and we had two or three good chances." The absence of several key attacking players, including Rhian Brewster who is currently sidelined, was felt keenly. The team's overall form of LWLDL highlights the inconsistency they must address.
The defeat leaves Derby County seven points adrift of the early pace-setters, West Ham, and just above the relegation places. Their next match offers a quick chance for redemption, a home fixture against Birmingham City on September 12th. Birmingham currently sit 14th in the standings, making it a vital game for both sides. The Rams' squad is stretched, with experienced defenders Craig Forsyth, Derry Murkin, and Matt Clarke also out injured, adding to the manager's selection headaches.
Improving offensive output is the immediate priority. Eustace must find a way to make his team more potent in attack, especially when facing defensive setups. Integrating returning players from the treatment room will be important, but those currently fit must show more composure. The team's schedule shows a run of important fixtures, which fans can track on the club's fixtures page. The focus now shifts entirely to preparing for the Birmingham game, where Derby will be desperate to stop the slide and climb the table. Their next Championship match is at home to Birmingham City on 12 September 2026.
