Derby County Struggles Against Burton Albion

Despite retaining the Bass Charity Vase, Derby County's recent friendly against Burton Albion was far from convincing. The match ended in a 1-0 victory for Burton, with Tyrese Shade converting a penalty kick after Oscar Fraulo's clumsy foul on Tomas Kalinauskas.

Derby struggled to create chances and lacked the pace required to break down their opponents. Joe Ward missed a golden opportunity to equalize just before halftime when his effort went wide of the post. The game also saw several incidents of tempers flaring, including a contentious penalty appeal for Filip Bilbija and a tackle that left Kalinauskas on the ground.

Urgent Need for New Players

Manager Gary Eustace acknowledged the need to strengthen Derby's squad ahead of the upcoming Championship season. While Sam Szmodics completed his move to the club, the center midfield and wide areas remain under-equipped. A striker is also needed given that Carlton Morris and Lars-Jorgen Salvesen form a weak top three.

Eustace highlighted that Lewis Travis remains the only central midfielder with significant Championship experience, while Bobby Clark's position on the left wing could be vulnerable if either he or Oscar Fraulo gets injured. The latter has yet to fully adapt to English football, and Kenzo Goudmijn is also expected to leave the club.

Bilbija's Adaptation Needed

The new signing from Paderborn, Filip Bilbija, showed promise in his 60-minute debut but will need time to adjust. The pace of English football demands quick decision-making, and Bilbija must learn to handle possession better. His goal-scoring record for Paderborn is impressive, but translating that success to the Championship will be challenging.

Kane's Excellent Penalty Saves

After the match, a penalty shootout was held in preparation for the Carabao Cup. Academy goalkeeper Sam Kane performed exceptionally well, making several crucial saves. While Derby missed some of their own penalties, Kane's performance was commendable and bodes well for his future with the club.
