Derby County centre-back Sondre Langas has expressed no surprise at the Rams' significant turnaround and current playoff push, attributing the club's impressive rise to the immediate impact of manager John Eustace. The Norway international believes the unity forged throughout the club since Eustace's arrival has been the driving force behind their progress.
Langas joined the Pride Park outfit in February, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal from Viking, just 13 days before John Eustace took the helm. At that time, Derby County was languishing in 21st place, narrowly avoiding the relegation zone on goal difference. Eustace, 46, successfully steered the Rams to safety on the final day of the previous season, despite a challenging start to his tenure.
The current season began slowly for Derby County, with the team winless throughout August. Langas himself did not feature until October as he recovered from a knee injury. However, following his return, the Rams' form dramatically improved, embarking on a five-game winning streak between October and November, setting the stage for their continued upward trajectory.
This positive momentum has propelled Derby County into serious playoff contention as they head into the final game of the season. Sitting eighth in the league, the Rams are just one point behind both seventh-placed Hull City and sixth-placed Wrexham. With a superior goal difference, a win in their next match could secure a route to Wembley if both Hull City and Wrexham fail to win, while even a draw might suffice if both rivals lose.
Langas firmly stated on RamsTV, "No, I’m not surprised that we are. I don’t know if you call it quick turnaround or what you call it, but I think you could feel it when the gaffer came and everything, the togetherness with the team and the club and the fans and everyone on the whole tied well together." He highlighted how this collective spirit has been crucial in raising standards.
The 25-year-old defender emphasized that this unity has accelerated Derby County's progress, allowing the side to take a significant step forward. While acknowledging the achievements as a positive stride, Langas also stressed that a strong desire remains within the squad to continue striving for even greater success.
