Derby County edge closer to Ikwuemesi deal as play-off push takes shape
Derby County are in advanced talks to sign 24-year-old striker Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi from Belgian side OH Leuven, with a reported £3.5m fee on the table. The Rams, who finished eighth in the Championship last season with 69 points from 46 games, are looking to bolster their attack after missing out on the play-offs by just two points. League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 8th in Championship, 69 pts, 20W-9D-17L from 46 games, recent form LWLWL.
The American forward Patrick Agyemang’s ACL injury means Derby need a new striker, and Ikwuemesi’s four goals for OH Leuven last season make him a target. Reports from journalist Lorenzo Lapore on X suggest talks are progressing, though no deal is yet confirmed.
Why Ikwuemesi fits Derby’s summer rebuild
Ikwuemesi’s career has seen him rise from Nigerian youth ranks to European football. After spells in Austria and Slovenia-where he scored 10 goals in 32 games for NK Celje in 2022/23-he moved to Serie A with Salernitana in 2023, though limited game time followed their relegation. A year later, he joined OH Leuven and has since become a regular, contributing consistently in attack.
Derby’s recruitment under John Eustace has been steady this summer. Charlie Taylor arrived on a free transfer, while Filip Bilbija added versatility in midfield. Links with Sammie Szmodics also persist, but Ikwuemesi’s arrival would further strengthen the frontline as the Rams push for a top-six finish.
What comes next for Derby and their new target?
The Rams still need to address defensive gaps, particularly with Danny Batth’s future uncertain. Once that’s resolved, their squad could look far stronger than last season’s 67 goals scored and 59 conceded (+8 goal difference) output.
For Ikwuemesi, a move to Derby would be a chance to prove himself in England’s second tier after a mixed stint in Italy. The 24-year-old has three Nigeria U20 caps but is yet to earn a senior call-up, so first-team football at Pride Park could be key to his development.
The deal isn’t done yet, but Derby’s summer momentum is building as they target a play-off push this term.
